Course Description:

If your company ships hazardous materials or dangerous goods in the United States, you must comply with the US Department of Transportation’s Code of Federal Regulations 49 CFR. The 49 CFR requires that employees involved in shipping hazardous materials within the U.S. receive training (49 CFR, Subpart H, Section 172.704). This course will help provide you with the knowledge that you need to fulfill your responsibilities as a ground transportation carrier using the US DOT Code of Federal Regulations Title 49, otherwise known as 49 CFR.

This course is intended to meet applicable training requirements in 49CFR, Subpart H, Section 172.704 for ground carrier staff. This course is not a registered training provider for Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements for CDL and Hazmat Endorsements as stated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

  • The structure of the 49 CFR regulations
  • Requirements specific to ground carriers found in Part 177 of the 49 CFR
    • General information and regulations
    • Loading and unloading
    • Segregation and separation
    • Vehicles and shipments in transit
  • Security awareness
  • Emergency response information

Course Description:

If your company ships hazmat or dangerous goods, the U.S. Department of Transportation requires the general awareness, safety and security training specified in 49 CFR Part 172.704 be taken every three years. This course meets the general awareness, safety, and security training requirements.

This course covers:

  • An introduction to hazardous materials
  • Why training is important and what the requirements are
  • Which agencies set the requirements, and the publications which state their requirements
  • The transport chain, including shipper and operator responsibilities within it
  • Hazmat classifications
  • General packing requirements and proper package selection
  • How to mark and label packages correctly
  • How to correctly document hazmat shipments

Please Note: This course is an overview of the regulations, and is not for qualification or certification. This course is NOT for personnel who are responsible for acceptance checklists and regulatory review to determine compliance for a given shipment. Employees responsible for determining if packages comply with relevant regulations and employees responsible for certifying shipments (by signing a dangerous goods declaration or hazmat bill of lading) will require additional training as specified by their employer.
