If you ship dangerous goods by air on either passenger or cargo airlines, you must comply with the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the legally binding document Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The majority of the world’s airlines use the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations which incorporates all the provisions found in the ICAO Technical Instructions and additional requirements deemed appropriate by air carrier.

Training Requirements:

The IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) requires that employees involved in the shipping, including the packaging, labeling, documenting, or loading/unloading the dangerous goods for air shipment are required to receive training (IATA DGR 1.5). The IATA DGR requires recurrent training at least every 24 months.

Primary Audience:

This online training is intended for the entire value chain including manufacturers, shippers, airlines, freight forwarders and ground handlers involved in the handling, shipping, and/or transport of dangerous goods by air. This training will satisfy the minimum training requirements specified in the IATA DGR.

If your work involves handling, shipping, and/or the transport of hazardous materials to, from or within the United States by vessel, you must adhere to the regulations that are set forth in 49 CFR Part 171, Subpart C which requires hazardous materials being offered into transportation by vessel, motor carrier, or rail in accordance with the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code), provided all or part of the movement is by vessel must conform to the requirements in 49 CFR 171.22.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) maintains the IMDG Code. CHEMTREC and our online training course are not affiliated with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This course does provide required initial and recurrent training requirements to participants involved with the handling, shipping and/or transport of dangerous goods by vessel.
